NHI Idler History

Idler Pulleys - New Hampshire Industries manufactures idler pulleys in four (4) product designs using three (3) bearing types.  The product designs are:

Stamped

By using stamped halves surrounding a bearing these offer an economical pulley for high volume applications.  Selecting from NHI's many tooled "A" and "H" series products allows them to also be cost-effective in many low volume uses.  See our catalog for the many common sizes (and a few uncommon ones) available.

Molded

 Polymer

NHI also offers our "A" and "H" series bearings molded into polymer pulleys.  While the standard idlers are molded in a type 6/6 nylon with glass reinforcement, we offer other polymers on a Made-to-Order (MTO) basis.

Split-formed

The perfect compliment to our split-formed drive pulleys, these idler pulleys are available with either a replaceable or non-replaceable bearing.  See our engineering page on Split-Formed Idlers for details.

Machined

This MTO family offers the greatest flexibility in manufacturing the custom part to fit your application.  Contact us with your design and usage for a quote today.  Due to their low tooling cost, fully machined idlers can be the economical answer when the volume usage is low and/or the pulley is complex.

A Brief History of NHI Idler Pulleys

New Hampshire Industries, INC (NHI) was founded in 1960 to produce idler pulleys.  Our "A" Series bearing was the key ingredient of the first idler pulleys produced.  Today, we still build our "A" Series idlers using a combination of the time-tested design and continual improvement to ensure that our customers continue to have a cost-effective product.

The "A" Series bearing was originally designed by the Lebanon, NH based company named Splitball Bearing (today known as Timken Aerospace- and still in business here in Lebanon!) during the 1950's. Splitball had started the pulley line and sold it off, desiring to remain a manufacturer of only bearings.

The "A" was joined by a "B" bearing, a design for heavier loads but lower speeds.  The "B" was eventually supplanted by our "H" Series idler pulleys that exist today, utilizing standard ABEC-1 bearings such as the 6200, 6203, and 99502H to keep the heavier load capability while increasing the speed range.

We also produce idlers using "plane" bearings.  Starting in the early days of NHI (and continuing today) these oil-impregnated bronze bushings and powder metal steel bushings have been joined by the more recently developed PTFE lined sheet steel bushings for use in low speed, heavy load applications.

Today, NHI manufactures idlers with stamped halves, fully machined, and from our split-formed steel technology.  NHI has a long history of producing just the idler pulley that you need.  What can we build for your current idler pulley application?  Contact support@nhipulleys.com today.
